I’ve read 100 books so far in 2021.
Who am I? How did this happen?
2021 has been the best reading year of my life. Last year, I read 67 books total, so I set my 2021 reading goal at 75 thinking it would be a major challenge for me.
But here we are, mid July and I have finished my 100th book of the year. I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around it to be honest.
I started the year out with “>Throne of Glass Series.
After rereading the Throne of Glass series, I cruised through quite a few Fantasy books at the start of the year, with a few Fantasy Romance thrown in. It was a very even split between fantasy and romance for the first couple months.
Then April hit and I basically went all romance all the time. Dark Romance, New Adult Romance, Fantasy Romance, Military Romance, Sports Romance you name it I have read it in the last few months.
To put it in perspective, from January to April I read 30 books. Still super amazing for me and I was proud of myself at the time! But, I have read 70 books in the last 4 months. All of them some type of romance. I have no regrets and that brings me into how I have read 100 books so far this year.
How I’ve Read 100 books So Far This Year
One of the main factors, I think contributed in how many books I have read so far this year is that I live in Alberta, Canada. That means that from Januaury until April, it is cold. We are still fully into winter, and so I wasn’t doing the active outdoor stuff Ryan and I tend to do in the summer.
We also did not come out of our COVID-19 restrictions until the end of June. Which means, that even though you could do some things, you still didn’t have much of a social life. What was I going to do when it was still cold and I couldn’t see people? Read obviously.
Another way I was able to read so many books so far this year, is that I really prioritized reading. I take the bus to and from work, which is a little over an hour each way. Some days I will use this time to catch up on engaging on Insatgram, but this year more days than not, I spend that time reading. That’s 2 hours a day I get to read relatively uninterupted.
I also read almost every night before bed. Ryan is a night owl, where I go to be much earlier than he does. I usually go up into bed around 9:00pm, and will read for at least a few minutes. This sometimes turns into hours and regrets, but it is what it is.
The BIGGEST reason I have been able to read so many more books this year than I ever have is I went completely by mood.
As a bookstagrammer, I often feel pressured into reading the newest YA Fantasy releases, or the popular series I haven’t gotten around to yet for fear of missing out. Not just of missing out on knowing what everyone is talking about, but also of the opportunities to capatilize on posting content featuring those books while they’re up in popularity.
When April hit, and I was like, I need some spicy romance in my life, I decided to get a Kindle Unlimited supcription. This was such a fantasic decision because it meant that whatever I was in the mood for was right at my finger tips, free to read and available immediately. If one day I felt like a sport romance, I had 100s to choose from and the next day I could be reading one about Blue Aliens ( Book Tok did make me read Ice Planet Barbarians and I have a review of it coming soon)
Deciding to take the pressure off of myself of only reading popular books, is why I am at 100 books this year.
My biggest piece of advice, is to just read what you want. Whatever sounds good at the time. If you are able to set a TBR and stick with it, you amaze me.
I am not sure how many books I will end up reading for the rest of the year. Can I make it to 150? 200? I have no idea, and it all depends on if I hit a reading slump, which I have thankfully avoided so far this year.
That is all. Have a fantastic day!
